“Urghhh. I can’t stand much more of this.”

With that said, the book before him was slammed shut and he pushed it away. He sat down on his bed, lost in thought.

*I can’t believe mom is making me study all of these hours while it’s nice outside. I would rather train then study in my bedroom, but she won’t have any of it. She doesn’t want me to follow in my dad’s footsteps. Rather she wants me to study my brains out so I can become a scholar. Mom never gives me the chance to tell her how I feel about this!*

Son Gohan sighed and stared at the window. A sudden thought entered his mind. *I wonder if…*

“Gohan! Why aren’t you studying like I wanted you to?!” his mother’s voice demanded from the doorway.

Gohan saw his mother tap her foot impatiently. *Here she goes…* “Mom, I’ve been studying for hours and I needed to take a break. I promise it won’t be more then five minutes.” he said.

Son Chichi started to curve her face into one of disapproval, but then her face softened. *He’s been working so hard on his studies; He does deserve a break. After all, he will be a scholar.* “Since you have been studying so hard, you can take a break. The break will be five minutes no more no less, you hear? After you come back you get back to your studying Gohan.” she responded.

“Of course mom.” Gohan replied. Chichi smiled and walked away.

His gaze lingered at his textbook, then at the window, and back at the book. “I don’t want to study anymore; I want to go outside and train. Mom cannot keep me inside this house forever studying. Maybe I should sneak out my window, go retrieve my Saiyan armor from Namek, and go train. In the past, I would have been worried about how much mom would yell at me, but not today. I wish dad were here…”

*Sorry mom…I can’t stay inside any longer.* Gohan opened the window and started to fly out when he remembered something. *I can’t forget that! Now where did I hide that? Oh, yeah…* He searched under his bed until his hands grasped something. Pulling, Gohan smiled. “That’s definitely it. Mom would kill me if she found out I had this…” In his hand was a cell phone, one that Bulma had made for him…

-Flashback-

A sigh of relief escaped from his lips as Gohan headed for the familiar building of Capsule Corporation. A quick scan told him that Vegeta was in the GR. *Good, I don’t want to encounter him…* He searched for Bulma’s ki and found it in the lab. “Alright, here goes nothing.” he said.

Bulma set the tool down; her mind calculating the necessary adjustments. *It’s almost done; I just have to make some minor adjustments. Let’s see, I need to adjust this, that, that piece there, and…*

“Bulma, I need your help.” a voice interrupted.

Startled out of her thoughts, Bulma jumped and turned to face the visitor. Coal-black eyes met her own aqua. …*Gohan?!* “Gohan, you gave me a scare! What brings you here? Aren’t you supposed to be studying…?” she said casually.

“Sorry about that Bulma; I didn’t mean to. I WAS studying; my mom wouldn’t let me leave, so I snuck out the window.” Gohan apologized.

*So he’s not in any trouble. I always thought that Chichi was pushing him too hard in his studies, considering he snuck out to see me. He must want my help in something…* Bulma thought, her gaze on Gohan “So kid, what do you need?”

Gohan smiled inwardly. *I thought she might chew me out for scaring her.* ”Um…well…I was wondering if you could build me a portable phone; one that I could take with me while I’m outside.” he answered.

“You may be in luck, kid. I am almost done with something I created. Here take a look.” Bulma said, showing Gohan the invention.

It looked exactly like one of those cell phones Gohan had seen. Only this one had some modifications to it. *How neat! How did Bulma know that my request would actually be the project she’s working on? She couldn’t have known; I just told her now. Bulma always did have the knack for coming up with inventions when we needed them…*

“Wow! That’s neat Bulma! How long will it take you to finish it?” Gohan exclaimed.

“Well…,” Bulma paused, “I think it should take me a couple of hours to finish it. Since you’re here already, why don’t you stay? I won’t tell Chichi that you were here…”

“You really would do that Bulma?”

Bulma’s gaze softened and she laughed. “Of course I would Gohan. I wouldn’t want this incident to fuel Chichi’s anger. Boy, there are times when I wish that I could shut up her rantings with a nice punch to her face; no offense Gohan.”

The half-saiyan shook his head. “None taken.” he said

Bulma picked up the tool again and set to work. Gohan’s thoughts raced back to the subject of studying. Sometimes he had the urge to get rid of all the books that his mom had bought him, but he never went through with it. He never wanted to face his mother’s wrath especially if it came to his studies.

*The mere thought of my mom’s reaction gives me the chills… At least I can actually RELAX! The pressure of studying is off my back, even though it is for a little while. Might as well use the time wisely*

“Ah, that’s it! It’s finished! Gohan, take a look.” Bulma squealed, causing Gohan to jump. In her hands she held the phone. “Now Gohan, I have tuned the phone to your phone at home, so it will receive calls that are directed to your house.”

“Thanks Bulma.” Gohan said, tucking the phone away.

He headed for the door when he heard Bulma’s voice, “Do take care of it Gohan! For the time I spent on that thing, I hope I won’t have to fix it! But I have a feeling that you will.”

-End Flashback-

Gohan tucked the phone away as he remembered Bulma explaining that. The seven-year old half saiyan left quietly. *I have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that something going to happen soon and I want to be ready even though dad isn’t here. That’s why I am going to retrieve my Saiyan armor. I hid it in a cave near my house.*

The cave itself wasn’t too far from his house, which is why he choose the spot. Gohan changed into the armor. He now needed a place to train. “Hmm…maybe that place will do?” he said. Taking one look back at his house, Gohan headed off. The spot he chose was very simple: he stood in a secluded area in the forest. Picturing an opponent, Gohan went into a flurry of kicks and punches.

A rapid motion of moves all blurred into one; creating the ultimate combination. All in favor of pounding your opponent to the ground before they have a chance to do it to you. The only thing that he had on his mind was to hone his skills. “Hopefully, the rest of the Z-Sensei and I don’t have to face an enemy that’s stronger then all of us.” *Since we don’t have my dad…*

A beeping sound interrupted his thoughts; Gohan wondered who would be calling and answered. “Hello?”

A brief pause before, “Gohan, that you? It’s Krillin.”

Gohan detected a hint of worry in his voice. “Hey Krillin! How’s it going?”

“You haven’t sensed it?”

“Sensed what Krillin?”

“The two power levels that feel like Frieza.”

*I must have been totally focused on my training…WHAT?!* “WHAT?! Frieza!? I thought my dad defeated him! How could there be two power levels like Frieza?”

“I don’t know Gohan. We need you to meet the others in the Northern Wastelands [1].”

“I’ll be there real soon; I’m just out training…”

“Escaping your mom, huh? I wouldn’t blame you buddy.”

“I know Krillin. See you there!”

“Thanks Gohan. Bye.”

A sense of dread washed over Gohan. *This is bad. I just hope we can deal with this…*
