Dreams, within the still of night
On wings of hope take flight, inside of me, oh
Sleep did not come easily. He lay quietly, trying hard not to move, but it was hard. He turned his head enough so he could look at the one sleeping beside him. A slow smile tilted his lips. Mirai was beautiful in sleep. Completely and utterly breathtaking. He rolled onto his side, carefully, and reached out to place his fingers on Mirai’s cheek.
It was hard to imagine that in such a short time he had become so attached to this person, and yet he knew it was meant to be. Mirai wasn’t really a complete stranger. Their souls were bonded after all. And part of him, the part that was still Han, remembered Mirai very well.
His cheeks flushed.
He’d been having dreams.
Dreams of Han and Mirai.
Dreams of heat, passion, and love.
In sleep he relieved everything they’d ever done, and during the day the closest he ever got to Mirai was to hold his hand. With a sigh he rolled onto his back and stared up at the dark sky. It was all so confusing.
There, upon some distant shore
We want for nothing more than what will be
Her hands were soft. He turned into her touch, opening his eyes to smile at her. She smiled back, leaning forward to capture his lips with her own. Natural. It was all so natural. Not like this had been with others. This was perfect. They fit like no others could.
He belonged to her and she belonged to him. Without the other they were incomplete.
Mirai woke with a start, eyes snapping open. He turned his head, staring at Gohan’s sleeping form. Gohan. Not his Han. Not the Han he dreamed of, every night since his memories were returned to him.
Gohan was shivering in his sleep and acting more out of instinct than anything else, Mirai rolled over and wrapped his arms around Gohan’s trembling form. Gohan reacted much the same as Mirai had, turning into Mirai’s embrace and then immediately going still. Mirai held his breath, but Gohan remained sleeping.
//Is this my Han?// Mirai wondered, staring down at Gohan’s beautiful face.
It still felt right. Even if Gohan was a male. Even if he barely knew this reincarnated person that Han had become. They still belonged, fitting like two halves of one person.
That’s the way it had been since they bonded.
And he had a feeling that’s the way they always would be.
And you and I, here we are
I wonder as we come this far
“GOHAN!”
Just as he started to fall he felt a firm hand grab his wrist. He hung over the side of the cliff, heart beating out of his chest in fear. He looked up into the worried eyes of his Mirai, and all the fear fled. He felt safe, even if he was still in danger.
Mirai pulled him up, back onto the narrow ledge they were walking on. Together they were passing through the mountains. Gohan had never questioned why when Mirai headed this way, he simply followed. Confident and trusting Mirai’s judgement. His arm was sore. It felt as if someone had tried to pull it out of it’s socket, and his legs were a bit shaky. He stepped closer to Mirai and relaxed as arms wrapped loosely around his waist, “All right?”
He looked up into Mirai’s worried face and nodded.
“You need to watch where you’re walking.” Mirai scolded.
Gohan smiled, “I was thinking.”
“Well stop thinking…” Mirai looked away, and with his eyes averted asked; “What were you thinking about?”
Gohan reached up, cupping Mirai’s cheek with his hand, “You.”
If I could only read your mind
Tell me the answer I would find
“Me?” Mirai repeated softly.
Gohan nodded, staring at Mirai searchingly. “Don’t you… don’t you think about Han, sometimes?”
Mirai hesitated to answer, and then finally he spoke.
Do you dream of me?
“I do.”
And when you’re smiling in your sleep
Beyond the promises we keep
‘Don’t you think about Han sometimes?’ The question bothered Mirai. He sat hunched on a log as he watched Gohan peacefully sleeping. The firelight highlighted his features and Mirai found he couldn’t look away. This wasn’t Han. Wasn’t the woman he dreamed of every night. This was Gohan. A innocent… child.
The more he thought of Han, the more he found himself uncomfortable with Gohan, because Gohan was so very different from the woman he had loved.
‘Do you love me, Mirai?’ He reached up, touching his cheek as he remembered a woman who had smiled at him with all her love in her eyes.
‘Yes.’
‘Will you love me forever?’
‘Yes.’
‘Do you promise?’
‘Only if you do.’
He shook his head out of the memories and focused once more on Gohan. Would he ever forget Han? Would he ever be able to love Gohan? He was afraid that he was already half in love with the boy and that only increased his confusion.
Do you dream of me?
A small noise woke him. He silted his eyes open and noticed Mirai staring at him from across the fire. Their eyes met and time seemed to slow. There was sadness in Mirai’s eyes. A sadness that Gohan felt keenly. “What are you thinking about?” he whispered, hardly aware that he spoke the thought aloud.
Mirai didn’t answer.
Gohan wasn’t surprised.
Love has found a magic space
A deep and hidden place where time stands still
Gohan sat up, and ran his hands through his hair. When he dropped his hands Mirai was beside him. “You.”
Mirai spoke hoarsely before grabbing Gohan’s upper arms and pressing their lips together in a kiss. Gohan gasped into the kiss but was unable to respond otherwise, he was far too surprised. He tilted his head, opened his mouth, and gave himself up to the kiss.
It was over far too soon.
Mirai pulled back, and Gohan was surprised to see tears on his cheeks. “I’ve fallen in love with you.”
Now I hold you in my arms
You know you hold my heart and always will
Gohan smiled, placing his hand on Mirai’s shoulder. “I know.”
“Gohan.”
Before Mirai could speak again Gohan pulled Mirai into his arms, hugging him tightly. “I know. You’ve always loved Han. I underst-”
“Not Han!” Mirai cried, “YOU! Gohan!” He wrapped his arms around Gohan’s waist and his voice was so broken that Gohan felt his heart twist painfully, “I love YOU!”
Gohan gasped, “But-”
His question was cut off when Mirai once again kissed him. This kiss was full of passion, love and fear.
It took his breath away.
And you and I, here we are
Tender.
Mirai was so careful with him. Touching him with hands that trembled ever so slightly. Slowly, and carefully Mirai made love to Gohan. And then, when they were done, he pulled Gohan into his arms and held him closely. Tightly. Holding as if he would never let go.
And it’s a wonder that we’ve come this far
He was crying. Mirai sucked in his breath, then began to gently stroke Gohan’s back. “Why are you crying?” He asked, his tone sharp with worry.
Gohan shook his head, “I don’t know… it’s like…” He let out a whimper and curled up as much as he could when he was pressed so closely to Mirai.
“Like?”
“Something inside me just died.” Gohan gasped, then he started to cry even harder.
If I could only read your mind
He cried himself to sleep. Mirai continued stroking his back. He kissed Gohan’s forehead, brow furrowed with worry. ‘Something inside me just died.’
‘Will you love me forever?’
‘Not Han! YOU! Gohan! I love you!’
In finally giving himself over to love, he had betrayed Han. The part of her that had been in Gohan had finally been laid to rest. Leaving just Gohan.
Tell me the answer I would find.
He didn’t dream of Mirai that night. When he woke he felt strangely refreshed, but also slightly hollow. He opened his eyes and smiled when he saw Mirai’s sleeping face beside his own. They had slept side by side, with Mirai’s arms around Gohan’s waist. He reached out, trailing a finger over Mirai’s lips.
He watched as a small smile tilted Mirai’s lips. The man was waking and Gohan couldn’t help but wonder…
Who are you thinking of?
Who do you imagine is touching you?
Do you dream of me?
“Gohan.” Mirai whispered moments before his eyes opened. He smiled when he saw Gohan beside him.
Gohan smiled back, his heart jumping.
Me.
He knew it was me.
No more Han. No more old Mirai. Now it was just them. Bonded by their souls, but now also bonded by love for who they were now.
