Feeding the Flames, Chapter #23
Summary: Something is seriously wrong with Trunks – but will Gohan be willing to do what is necessary to save him? Will they be able to live with the consequences if he does?
Gohan woke from a light doze as Trunks began shifting in his arms, close to waking. A glance at the clock indicated that only a few hours had passed since the children’s “delivery.” He studied his mate while waiting for Trunks’ eyes to open.

Trunks first noted a strange distance from his children, and a corresponding emptiness. They were still close, but not so near as they had been, to him or to each other. Gohan’s warmth was at his back, however, and he was awake. He opened his eyes.
“How are you?”
He thought on that for a moment then sighed, gazing at his children as Gohan’s arms tightened around him. “Kind of… empty. They aren’t so close to me, anymore, and I miss being able to feel them like that. But… I still have a connection of sorts with them. I think I’m just much more attuned to their kis than I’ve ever been to anyone’s.” Trunks tried to lighten the mood. “Of course, even if we’re separate now, I wouldn’t want to be pregnant forever!”
Gohan chuckled appreciatively and sat up, pulling Trunks with him and into his chest again. Nuzzling at his hair, he broached the subject he’d been thinking on. “What do we name them?”
Trunks considered that, examining the children. “How about we name two each? But we can veto the others idea, if we think it’s that bad.”
Gohan was silent for a moment. “Alright. So… which ones do I get to name?”
“Why don’t we just alternate?” Trunks moved from Gohan’s embrace to cuddle their first born, bringing him back. “I’m naming him.” Trunks took some time to examine him, brushing a hand through spiky purple locks, noting the dark brown tail, and as the baby woke to his attentions, gazing into black, Saiya-jin eyes. “I think he takes after you the most. How does ‘Goya’ sound?”
Gohan smiled. “Keeping up my family tradition, huh? I like it. Goya he is.”
As Trunks placed the newly-named Goya back, Gohan leaned forward and cradled their second son in his arms. So tiny… he had a gentle fuzz of black hair, which Gohan thought would be straight, silver tail just like his father’s, and blue eyes which matched Trunks’ as well. “I think he takes after you the most, love, but unless you don’t like my idea he won’t be named after you.”
Trunks raised an eyebrow in question. “Oh? What do you have in mind?”
“Ashke. There are these books I found before, I don’t think you’ve read them, and in a language in them ‘Ashke’ is love/beloved. It’s pretty by itself, and I know we’ll love him…”
Trunks came up behind him, leaning on his shoulder and studying their infant’s face. He kissed Gohan on the cheek. “Ashke he is. Now for the other two…” He crouched to the side of them, looking his last sons over, twitching the blankets aside to see their little tails and wiggling his fingers in front of their eyes. “They’re like opposites…”
Gohan had to agree. One had pale, ice-blue hair and a pair of the most amazing royal purple eyes he’d ever seen. Actually, they were the first eyes he’d ever known to wear that shade. The hair of the other matched his sibling’s eyes, stunningly dark, and his eyes his brother’s hair. Their tails differed, however. The blue-haired child had a tail of mixed black and blue, while the purple-haired one’s was a mix of his hair colour and white.
Trunks picked up his amethyst-haired offspring, and motioned Gohan towards his brother. Each contemplated the baby in their arms. “Komura.” Trunks decided first, and Gohan had to agree that it was suitable for him.
“Aoki.” Trunks smiled at him for that one, and they sat, enjoying this time together. They were introduced to what the reality of raising children would be like as Goya began howling for food, his siblings joining in with demands of their own. The great cycle of ‘keep the babies happy’ began.
End note : Explaining the names.
Goya : Well, the ‘tradition’ is “All names start with Go.” I just picked a different ending.
Ashke : Basically explained in the fic. The books I’m referring to are the Valdemar series, by Mercedes Lackey. It’s in the Tayledras language.
Komura : Probably doesn’t work out exactly as I want it to, but ‘ko’ is child or little (in MANY japanese names, most feminine, though) and ‘Mura’ for ‘Murasaki,’ the Japanese word for purple.
Aoki : ‘Ao’ for ‘Aoi,’ though just ‘ao’ does carry the full meaning–blue. Ki as the ki often talked about in DBZ basically, energy and/or strength.
