That night, the nightmares had ceased. No longer did he dream about Mirai’s death or his alternate self. In fact, his sleep was a dreamless oblivion, one that the half-Saiyajin embraced after two weeks of restless, horror-filled nights.
However, Gohan still knew there was another person he had to approach, one person whom he had to talk to in order to completely get over his guilt, and it was the one person he didn’t want to see for this particular manner because the man was just like him – or should he say, he was just like the man. The apple never falls too far from the tree, as the saying goes.
What would he say? How would he say it? How could he prevent the other from taking all of the guilt away by placing it on their own shoulders? Both men had to understand that it was an unfortunate play of fate – and, now that Gohan realized it, it was one that had saved their lives in the end.
Yet, Gohan still had to figure out how to tell the older man, and that was something he didn’t want to linger on right now. No, he just wanted to enjoy life, he wanted to savour the guilt-free feeling in his chest.

Gohan blocked a kick and threw a punch at his father. Then he ducked to avoid another blow dealt by Goten from behind.
Flying below the pair he smiled before bringing his assaults towards the oldest Son – it would be unfair to gang up on Goten – and both half-Saiyajins teamed up against their dad.
Fists and feet were flying towards their father, fighting to have even a flick of force that wasn’t foiled by a forearm or a flip. “Heh…” He huffed and hid from a hurling arm. “You guys are getting good.” He held his arm firmly against his son’s shin, and two fists were locked forcefully. Then, an elbow came crashing down on Goku’s collar. Their father responded with a recoiling kick which sent Goten flying off into a cliff. “He’s getting stronger all the time.”
Gohan nodded “I wonder how long it’ll take for him to reach level two.” He said before he charged up his ki and the two of them began another dance of fists and feet in the air.

“Bulma called while you three were out training.” Chi-Chi said to her three boys. “To remind us about the Trunkses’ birthdays next weekend.”
Gohan froze. He forgot about that, and he still hasn’t gotten anything for Trunks, and not even Mirai. With a slight blush he remembered the birthday gift Mirai had gotten him all those years ago. What would he get Mirai? He wanted to give him something precious and something personal, yet what could he do? Next to him, he also noticed his younger brother had a similar reaction, and his face almost seemed panicked. At least it wasn’t tomorrow.
Goten was pulling on his shirt. “Big brother?” He whispered and looked up at Gohan with his big black eyes. “C-Could you help me pick out something for Trunks?”
The older half-Saiyajin gave a soft chuckle and ruffled Goten’s hair. “Sure, I need to get a gift for both of them anyway. How about tomorrow, after my classes?”
Goten beamed a smile up at him and hugged him. “Thanks big brother!” he said before running over to the table for supper.

Videl was giving both him and Mirai knowing glances as they walked into the class in the morning. He hoped that she had not told Sharpener and Erasa – he’d rather tell them himself. (Although, it was more than likely that Mirai would beat him to it. Why did it seem that those he went out with were keen on teasing him?)
“Hey there.” Videl said with that mischievous grin.
“Hey Videl.” Gohan said and Mirai nodded.
“Hey Gohan~” Erasa said in a singsong voice. “You’re kinda twitchy today – wassup?”
Gohan forced back the colour in his cheeks. “N-Nothing.”
“Did’ya catch that Sharpener? Look at him!” Erasa said while she nudged the other blond with her elbow. “Gohan’s lying~ Hey Mirai, would you happen to know why Gohan’s acting all weird today?”
Gohan saw a Vegeta smirk on Mirai’s face. No! He wouldn’t! The time traveller moved and leaned on Gohan’s head with his crossed arms as he looked at Videl. Dende… what have I gotten myself into! Gohan thought dreadfully.
“I dunno, should we tell them Videl?”
“Hm… I don’t know. The temptation is great, but Gohan’s current dread is just so amusing right now. And, just think, every moment he’d be on the guard, expecting us to drop the bomb.”
“I think you’re right Videl.” Mirai added in, still leaning on Gohan’s head. However, the Son was grateful – for his friends couldn’t see his blush. Why did they have to be so cruel!
Gohan didn’t know if he was lucky when the teacher came in to start class, or if fate decided to pick on him too. What on Earth did I do to deserve this?
.+++.
The two had strung the rest of them along, and when the lunch break finally began, Gohan was almost at his wit’s end. Why couldn’t he have a normal day with an abnormal boyfriend?
“You eat almost as much as Gohan, Mirai.” Erasa commented on the amount of food Mirai brought to the spot they usually ate at. “I always thought Gohan was eating it all at first, but…”
Gohan’s eyes glanced over at Mirai curiously.
“Mirai’s very similar to Gohan.” Videl decided to say instead. “Super strong, and all of that.”
“Well, they did know each other years ago.” Sharpener added.
I’m so not telling them he’s from the future, that’d just make all sorts of trouble. Videl is fine, she’s seen all sorts of things, Erasa and Sharpener however… they just don’t quite know I’m part alien, and that I talk with the Kami of Earth at least once a month. Gohan thought. He wondered if he should telepathically tell Mirai that.
“Yeah, we have huge appetites to keep up this strength!” Mirai pitched in with a wink towards Gohan.
The Son sighed but began to wonder if he could telepathically communicate with Mirai. He could do it with his family, with Piccolo and Dende… but he’s known them his entire life, two were part of a race known to utilize telepathic abilities and the rest were his family. Was a friendship – a relationship – strong enough to form a psychic bridge between their minds? And then Gohan realized during his spacing out, Mirai had moved closer to him and had just placed his head on Gohan’s shoulder.
At first, it was comforting, it was welcome, but then he forgot where they were, who they were with. His face flamed up. “T-T-Tr-”
A hand was placed over his mouth, blocking his outburst and he whispered in Gohan’s ear. “I don’t think it would be wise to call me by my real name – it may cause some questions you’d rather not answer.”
Gohan shuddered before be pulled himself together and pushed Mirai away. Thank Dende he was a Saiyajin as well, or else he’d go flying. “T-T-M-M-Mirai!”
Both Erasa and Sharpener had their eyebrows raised at what had just occurred.
Gohan fisted his hands. “Mirai! Look what you did!”
Here both Videl and Mirai burst out laughing, which just worsened the burning on Gohan’s cheeks.
“Oh! I know! Mirai and Gohan are dating!” Erasa observed.
“It took you that long?” Sharpener asked condescendingly. “I know the moment Gohan relaxed.”
The look on Mirai’s face looked hurt, but Gohan knew that the other was just faking it. It looked pretty real though, enough to make Gohan want to comfort the other. So, he leaned in to put his head on Mirai’s shoulder.
Mirai responded by wrapping an arm around in a very familiar position.
“See, this explains why he broke up with me.” Videl whispered loudly to Erasa and Sharpener.
Gohan tried to shoot up and yell her name, but Mirai held him firm and whispered in his ear. “I only want you to be screaming my name in the throes of passion, no other Gohan.”
His face painted red again and he relaxed in the arms of his beloved. Fine.

“So what are your plans tonight? Do you want to come over to my house?” The lavender-haired prince asked as they walked out from the University.
“Uhh, actually I promised Chibi that I’d… spend some time with him today.” Gohan responded with a little difficulty. He always had trouble telling half-truths.
Mirai raised an eyebrow. “Oh, but didn’t you spend some time with him yesterday?”
“That was sparring!” Gohan replied a bit too quickly. “Besides this is… different.”
Mirai rolled his eyes. “Ookay… but you know where I’ll be – even if I didn’t tell you.”
Gohan laughed and took Mirai’s hand. “Yeah.” He said contentedly. “I’m glad that they didn’t react badly to our relationship.”
The other looked at Gohan with a smile and pecked his lips. “Now we just need to worry about our parents. I’m not too sure about Goku or Vegeta, but I know our mothers are okay with it – well, assuming Mother here thinks similar to Mother in my time.”
“Oh uh…” Gohan said and rubbed the back of his head in that stereotypical Son-gesture. “Dad already kinda knows – at least that I like you.”
A curious lavender eyebrow rose again.
“Well, Mom told Dad about us being engaged and all – and Dad approached me. Let’s just say in the end he figured out that I like you, and being him, he couldn’t figure out why it would be bad.”
Mirai laughed. “That is so like Goku.”
“Yeah.” Gohan joined in on the laughter. “So he’s okay with us.”
“Gohan…” The older half-Saiyajin whispered as he stepped in front of his boyfriend. His hand moved to stroke Gohan’s face. “No matter what happens, no matter who rejects us, you know that I’ll still love you right?”
Why did the air suddenly feel so serious? Why was Mirai bringing this up now? “Y-Yeah.” Gohan said a bit nervously. What was this all about? “So will I Mirai.”
Their lips met, pushing again another but no movement. Then Mirai moved away with a smile on his face. “ Well I’ll let you and Goten have some brother time. Oh and by the way Gohan, I told you that you were flaming, I mean even Goku of all people figured it out!”
Gohan’s face flamed. “Trunks!” He yelled and looked at the running form of his boyfriend. He sighed and shook his head. He decided that they might as well go shopping since they were in the city. Gohan wandered over to the outskirts of the city before he spiked his ki to signal Goten to come. What would he get Mirai, he wondered. What would be acceptable to the man who saved his life?
.+++.
Most of the shopping and decisions were harder on his younger brother than on him. Gohan had already found a gift for Chibi Trunks, and Goten for Mirai, but he was watching Goten run around with indecision. It made him smile.
“Gohaaaaan!” Goten whined bringing two items up to him. “I can’t decide! Nothing seems good enough.”
“This is the fifth store we’ve been in Goten.” Gohan said, suppressing a chuckle. He understood what his little brother was going through though. Nothing in the stores they went to seemed good enough for Mirai either. “Why doesn’t anything seem good enough for Chibi?”
His little brother’s face lit up, and Gohan could see by his father likened it to an overripe tomato. “U-Uhm… it’s because he’s always nice to me and uh…”
Gohan couldn’t stop the laughter anymore and a few chuckles escaped him as he ruffled Goten’s hair. “How about we go to another store?”
In the next store, it was Goten who found the thing that he wanted to buy Trunks. “Big brother! Look!” He said and pointed to a watch encased in glass. “Can I get him that?”
Gohan smiled and looked at it. It was a bit on the pricy range, but he supposed it wouldn’t hurt. “Sure.” Then he went over to an employee and paid the money. “Let’s go home.”
Goten looked up at him. “But you haven’t gotten anything for big Trunks Gohan.”
“Ah, I just want to check something first before I make a final decision.” The oldest of the two responded with a smile. I want to get him something that will remind him of me every time he sees it. “Besides, I can always come back here after classes anyway.”
“Okay.” Goten said as he carried his two gifts.
.+++.
At home, Gohan rummaged through all of his boxes and all of his clothes, but he couldn’t find anything. He sighed and slid down the wall. What could he get for Mirai? He knew that it wasn’t the material things that mattered but the thought, yet Gohan wanted to do something for Mirai.
However, the question was: What? What could he give to Mirai? He knew that the other didn’t care, as long as there was heart in the gift.
Gohan let out another sigh. He had a lot of thinking ahead of him.

Aww…Gohan and Goten’s identical gift dilemmas were the best part of this one. So cute. I can’t wait to see what Gohan comes up with. :)
