“Gohan danced with almost abandon now, sweat fanning out from his slick body. Gohan, dramatically, straightened his legs into a wide stance and then lowered into a full split that highlighted every muscle of his legs, and showed off his pelvis to its best advantage.

A few men landed hands on him briefly, but he jumped up from the split on the floor, the power of his legs making men gasp as he stood once more on his Doc Martins.

Trunks clearly heard him say to a couple of men that pawed at him, “Move your hands or I’ll step on them.”

Gohan twirled once, twice, then stopped to face Trunks. He grabbed one side of his g-string, lowering it to give everyone just a peek at his dark pubic hair, all the while staring straight into Trunks’ eyes.”

“Gohan and Trunks sat down at one of the white plastic tables. For several minutes there was silence as attention was paid to the more important matters, until Gohan, toying with his Banana Split in a way that, given the aesthetic qualities of the dish, could almost certainly be called flirting, asked, “So, Mirai. What did you want to talk about?” Trunks looked up almost sharply. Taking in the innocently curious look Gohan was giving him and placing it against the way he was playing with his ice cream, he looked like he was suppressing an urge to swallow heavily”

Author’s Note: Happy New Year 2011. I tried to do something different than the usual New Year pictures with tuxedos, champagne and fireworks. That’s why I went for a typical Japanese New Year or Shōgatsu.

You can notice the reference to “Hatsumōde” which is the first trip of the year to a shrine or temple. Many people visit a shrine after midnight on December 31 wearing kimonos.

There’s also a “kadomatsu” which is a traditional decoration for the new year holiday to welcome ancestral spirits or kami of the harvest. They are placed after Christmas until January 7. They are typically made of pine, bamboo, and sometimes ume tree sprigs which represent longevity, prosperity and steadfastness, respectively.

And those rectangular paddles they’re holding are called “hagoita” and are used to play “hanetsuki”. Hanetsuki is a Japanese traditional game, similar to badminton without a net, played with a rectangular wooden paddle called a hagoita and a brightly-coloured shuttlecock. It’s often played at the New Year, the players have to keep batting the shuttlecock back and forth. The player who fails to hit the shuttlecock get marked on the face with India Ink. Traditionally, the longer the shuttlecock remains in the air, the greater protection from mosquitoes the players will receive during the coming year.
