Chapter 03: Minding Manners About Wizards
Trunks sighed deeply at the click of realization in his mind. Agree to... Was it that simple and that embarrassing? Mother’s Manners surfaced past the warrior training. Trunks set down his sword and genuflected. He asked, "Will you help Capsule kingdom? Please?"

Any trace of a frown melted off Gohan's face as he said, “Was that so difficult?”

Trunks groaned and pressed a gauntleted hand to his forehead. This Mazuko would be quite a handful. Was that why he was sent on this trip? Because his father thought he was languishing around the city far too long?

“You have divination among your skills?” asked Trunks.

“Depends on what you want me to divine,” Gohan asked.

“Master Mazuko Gohan…” Trunks began. “I’m in search of the Dragonfire blade… it was last seen to be in the possession of the Shadowbridgers… but was gone missing. It was said that one with Mazuko schooling could divine its location…”

“I could give it a try,” Gohan said with a shrug. “But no promises. If I can’t, I know who can… but I do know the last known location… which is the most logical first place to look.”

“Where? And how?”

“It could be hidden in plain sight, invisible to usual magics…” Gohan said between sips of tea. “But I didn’t bother to divine because I had no reason to, till now.”

Gohan levitated one of his tomes, holding it on the flat of one palm. The book had the pentagram with two points facing up that was one of the more common symbols Trunks recalled magicians using, and was reassuring to see. Representing the five elements of Earth, fire, air, water, and ether. He placed several other crystals around the scroll with the legend that Trunks had said was a link to the sword.

“Deflegrate muri temp et invervalia so occulo…” mumbled Gohan. Green haze radiated from his form and started to glow with the Mazuko aura that Trunks had seen before. In the one crystal streaked in green shadows formed. Trunks saw the blurred images, shadowy at first but starting to appear in green clouds above the crystal.

“Is it…” Trunks asked.

“A moment…” Gohan mumbled, finger pointed. He renewed his concentration, trying to sharpen the images so he could make sense of them. “The tower in Midbridge… under its shadow… last known location… but I can’t… there’s a trail leading elsewhere to Northflag… but then I can’t…”

A black cloud fogged the vision and Gohan grumbled at the sudden interruption in the spell. Trunks saw the anger on his face and the disappointment. “I guess that didn’t go too well?”

“This is a problem,” Gohan said clearing his throat, as the scent of smoke filled the room and Trunks waved away with one hand.

“A problem with your spell, or a problem with the location being changed? What exactly do you mean?” Trunks asked, his eyes watering.

“A problem as in I need to consult with another magic user, the witch Uranai Baba,” said Gohan rubbing the back of his neck.

“Uranai Baba? As in the one who brings the dead back for a span of one day,” Trunks asked, a bit incredulous. “I thought the Mazuko were terrific with…”

“It isn’t much help if there’s a ward preventing me from seeing it,” Gohan admitted, blushing. “She can see through any wards. The trail of it being moved stopped at Northflag.”

Trunks relented, surprised and slightly amused by the look on the other’s face, but not sure what impact it had on his opinion of the Mazuko in general. He rubbed his chin, mumbling, “So there’s nobody else you can go to? No other spells?”

“She and I have a good relationship,” Gohan said shrugging. He then reached for a scroll while Trunks pulled his maps out of his bag. Gohan cleared off a nearby table and unrolled the map he had.

“This is what I have of the region,” he said.

“Tapion, come out. Here's the map you need to scan,” Trunks called out.

The small blue spark fluttered out and darted around till it stopped before Gohan. He glanced at it bidding. “This is a deluxe model? How much did you pay the enchanter got this one… Or was it a gift? From your mother?”

Trunks nodded as Tapion spun around the Mazuko in tentative orbits. Gohan glanced over at it with amusement. “Tapion. Nice to meet you…”

It promptly blew a raspberry at Gohan before sparking brightly. The Mazuko rubbed the back of his neck and chuckled. “You must have gotten that vocabulary from your master, Tapion. Moon bridge bumper?”

“Tapion, shut it,” Trunks grumbled, glaring at his Sprite. It zipped quickly over the maps surface and bobbed.

“Full navigation capacity and all. Very nice. But your little buddy here is a liability if we depend on him… completely.”

“Excuse me?” Trunks snorted. Tapion let out a splitter.

“It's just that it's redundant to rely on a Sprite when you've a magic user, and that map doesn't show you all the traps and Mystic wards you might encounter till they're right on top of you,” Gohan said with a hand on his hip.

“Tapion does a halfway decent job,” Trunks snorted.

“He had issued against my wards,” the magician pointed out. “What good is a Sprite if it isn't immune to half of the magics out there?”

“He's good enough, and a capsule knight is trained to…”

“I hate to correct you but you're incorrect,” Gohan interrupted. “There are things out there that this pretty being can’t handle. And you have no idea what you are dealing with...””

With each word Gohan waved a finger in his face. Trunks glared and snorted, “big deal. That's part of adventuring. I'll learn to adapt.”

“Suit yourself,” Gohan sighed. “But he can't adapt…”

“That's your job,” the knight said snugly, smirking.

“Well the safest way isn't the one he memorized. It's better this time of year to… Head south,” Gohan said pointing at s dotted line that he traced a gleaming trail with his finger. He continued till it touched Northflag.

“Excuse me, but that's right through Orcish held territory,” Trunks protested.

“It's far easier,” Gohan said shrugging. “Not much need for traversing more ice and snow…”

“No. We take the fastest way! I don't have time to mess with orcs…” Began Trunks yet Gohan shook his head and clicked his tongue.

“Don't you really mean that Sprite isn't always reliable? Orcs counter then easily. Plus they like to buy them and sell them at s good price… You'll get nagged by gnomes who take offense to sprites saying you're using that one as a slave…”

“Get real. They won’t be an issue,” Trunks said dismissively waving a hand. “We don't encounter gnomes in this territory.”

“That's what I'm afraid of. You aren't familiar with that way. And they're not going to argue with us. Especially a Mazuko.”

“Look, the Sprite stays,” snorted Trunks.

“No hard feelings, Sprite. But your master is mistaken,” Gohan said as he ignored Trunks and looked kindly at the Sprite.

“No Orcish settlements! We lose a week going that way,” Trunks snapped.

Gohan shook his head and sighed. “Don't say I didn't warn you. But Capsulers take the hard way, I suppose. But fate be on your own head…”

Trunks nodded once grimly, his jaw clenched. “I'm fine with that.”

Two inquisitive chimes with an uplift to be answered Gohan. He nodded. “Mm hmm. But the way you're leading him you either cross a Glacier or go around it. And the glacier is very unstable this year.

“We don't have time for a long go around,” snapped Trunks.

“Seems like you're pretty cranky. Sleep on it here and we will talk in the morning,” Gohan said with a small smile Trunks took to be patronizing.

“I'm fine…” Trunks grumbled, glaring at the Mazuko. However he was loathe to admit he was weary.

Gohan waggled a finger at him, repeating as if was a child, “You’ve traveled a long way and are tired. We can speak more before we leave in the morning…”

“So just like that, you agree to help me?” Trunks asked, baffled as he combed a hand through his fringe.

“You asked nicely,” Gohan replied, motioning him to follow after a green orb floated from his outstretched palm. It cast both of them in a green glow that turned Gohan’s pale skin into a slight blanched spring green. Trunks could see the darkness of his black eyes and the hint of the black pupils in the irises.

“Eyes like a moonless midnight devoid of stars,” Trunks thought to himself, agreeing to follow the Mazuko magician up a spiral flight of stairs. The orange and maroon robes swished in the chilled air that arose around him, yet Gohan’s proximity was almost warm like the sun.

Still Trunks was on his guard for there was no telling what tricks a Mazuko could pull. Most were motivated by a love of money or power, and they did keep their word, provided you phrased your questioning properly. At the top of the stairs he unlocked a door and opened it up to present to Trunks. The glowing green orb illuminated the small sparsely furnished but neat room with a cot covered in blankets, an astrolabe, and multiple scrolls.

“You don’t get much company do you?” Trunks couldn’t help quipping.

“That would be telling,” Gohan answered mysteriously. “Of course if you prefer the hearth where it’s warm I don’t mind.”

Trunks quickly nodded, having been on the receiving end of one of Gohan’s small oddly placed tirades, if you could properly call it one. He didn’t like that dark bottomless black look those eyes had at that second, and for the sake of the quest would have to learn his ally’s foibles if they were to work together.
