Chapter 01 : To Be Blunt; We Were Beat Up
Pain; that was all he knew at that very moment; flesh searing pain and complete and total darkness. Every nerve in his body was screaming at him to wake up but his mind was telling him to stay down and never get up again.

He couldn't remember at the moment exactly how he was hurt so badly. He could only remember fighting those monsters at the theme park briefly.

Then, Trunks was in danger. He shouldered every attack to keep the boy safe from them. They went on the defensive, then as they were hiding he heard them say something about “pot shots”.... That was when everything went black.

He had to get up, had to defy every fiber of his being that screamed at him to just stay down and rest. He had to do it for Trunks. He forced his eyes open and scanned the ruined wasteland before him to find his precious little brother.

When he caught sight of Trunks’s motionless body he headed straight for him; screaming in pain as he made the agonizing crawl forward. He could feel his arm was gone. This only fueled his rage towards those bastards more now. They would pay for what they did here today; and all the days before this. They would pay for Piccolo, Vegeta, Tien, Chiaotzu, Krillin, and everyone else he ever lost to those androids. He swore to whatever god there still was if he lost Trunks this day the androids wouldn't live through the night.

He collapsed a few inches away from the boy and pulled out his bag of senzu beans; tearing the bag open to get at its contents. He felt his hope fade as he shook the bag and realized there was only one left, and he had to make a very tough decision.

“Damn, I liked having my arm.” He joked bitterly as he gripped the bean in his fist; knowing what he was about to do. He came closer and stared at Trunks for a brief moment, before collapsing once again in front of him. “Hey little bro, you did good today.” He praised breathlessly. He knew he didn’t have much time before he passed out again. So, he pushed the bean into Trunks’s mouth quickly so it could take effect.

“Swallow it Trunks. Live, you have to live!” He told him. As soon as he was done, he felt his consciousness fade and his mind go black once more with a single thought running through his head; “I will not lose another person I care deeply about again, especially you Trunks

It didn’t take long for Trunks to come to after swallowing the bean and when he awoke what he saw was the last thing he wanted to see. Gohan looked so lifeless laying there next to him. “Gohan!” It was all he could say as he sprang up as if he was never hurt in the first place. He was confused for a moment, before cold realization hit him hard.

“Damn it Gohan why’d you use your last senzu bean on me?!” He cursed. He was relieved when he lifted Gohan and heard a pained grunt; at least it meant he was still alive. “Don’t worry Gohan I’m gonna get you help, just stay alive for me okay?” He assured his master; shooting off into the sky towards home.

When he made it into the city limits of West city he decided to walk the rest of the way to Capsule Corp. It would be much safer for them if he hid his ki and walked while Gohan was still unconscious on his back. He hated to admit it but he was no match for the androids; even when Gohan was awake. He bit his lip in frustration as he trudged forward.

It’s not fair! I train so hard to be able to fight alongside Gohan and all I do is mess it up and get him hurt...I really am a joke…” He let out a defeated sigh as he looked at Gohan’s unconscious face, a tinge of pink dusting his cheeks. Even when knocked out he was a beautiful sight to Trunks. He could only hope he would be as amazing as him one day, if he lived that long. The moment that thought crossed his mind he shook it off; no he would make it out of this alive. They WILL defeat the androids and create a brighter future for themselves.

Then I can tell you how I feel.” Trunks may have been young but he was not blind to what was going on inside of him. He knew his feelings for his master went beyond mere admiration for him. He knew he loved Gohan more than anything and far more than just a master or an older brother figure. He swore to himself that he would see these androids defeated so he could freely tell Gohan how he felt and not worry about hindering Gohan with feelings that could get in the way of what they needed to do.

Trunks sighed in relief when he saw the doors of the old, dilapidated Capsule Corporation. He made his way through the hidden doors behind the main building to get down to his mother’s work shop. The sound of clicking keys and buzzes and hums of random machines and generators confirmed his suspicions. If his mother wasn't sleeping she was working on her time machine; sometimes sleeping at her work table.

He stepped into the shop wordlessly; the sound of the automatic doors opening alerting his mother of a visitor. When she realized who it was she felt her heart sink into her stomach. “Oh my God, Trunks! What happened?!” She shouted in concern at the disheveled state of her son and the unconscious man on his back. “To be blunt; we got beat up.” He answered in a slight deadpan. “Oh no, his arm! Get him to a bed, Trunks! Hurry!”

After that everything went by in a blur. Gohan was put into a bed, a doctor was fetched, and injuries were checked and treated. Gohan had woken up for a brief moment during his treatment to have Bulma tell him to relax as they kept treating; making the man scream in pure agony and pass back out. After all was said and done Trunks sat close by his master as his mother folded Gohan’s clothes.

“Isn’t it just a strange coincidence that you happened to run into Gohan while he was on his way to fight the androids at super world?” That snapped Trunks back into reality when he realized his mother asked him a question; with a hint of sarcasm. “Life’s funny that way sometimes.” Bulma just turned and smiled at him. “So you say Trunks dear. I know what you are up to. I wasn’t born yesterday you know. Why is it that teenagers think their parents are so stupid?” She teased, before being startled by the sound of Gohan actually moving and grunting in his bed.

“The doctor said he would be out for at least a week.” She marveled as she and her son watched Gohan wrestle with some inner demons inside his mind. “Where are those... damn androids?” he growled. Bulma frowned and put a hand on Gohan’s chest to keep him in bed. “Gohan, you need to stay in bed. You are very hurt and need rest.” She tried to instruct. Gohan didn’t listen though. He kept struggling to sit up in bed to try and get out of it.

Bulma sighed exasperatedly, placing her hands on her hips. “Like father, like son I guess. Trunks I am going to go get the doctor; see if he can give us something stronger to keep Gohan in bed. I’ll be back. Make sure he stays in that bed.” Trunks simply nodded as his mother rushed out of the room to get the doctor; his eyes never leaving Gohan’s face. It pained him to watch Gohan struggle with his inner battle alone. He wanted to help in any way he could; no matter how small. He placed a hand on his remaining arm and rubbed it gently.

“Gohan, wake up. There are no androids right now. We got away safely...mostly. You saved me and I am alright. You can rest.” he soothed. Hearing those words seemed to make the older man relax a bit, as he settled back into the bed. Trunks relaxed as well and smiled softly at Gohan. “ Rest well Gohan. You deserve it.”

After that Trunks rarely ever strayed from Gohan’s side. He treated his wounds, gathered food for him, and even washed him slightly while he was unconscious; so the wounds wouldn’t get infected. After a couple of days Gohan started to wake up fully while Trunks was preparing an apple for him. He let out a long groan of pain, from stiff unused muscles, as he managed to open his eyes and look over at Trunks, a tired and relieved smile gracing his face. “Hey, there little bro. Glad to see you are still standing after all that.”

Trunks was surprised, but overjoyed none the less, to see Gohan awake and was happy to hear his voice. He still felt that this was his fault though; Gohan wouldn’t be in that bed if not for him. He offered him a sad smile and offered the apple to him. “Yeah, all thanks to you. I would have been a goner if you hadn’t been there.”

“Nah, you would have been alive still. Beaten yes, dead; no.” Trunks just sighed. “I appreciate your confidence but you and I both know that isn’t true. If I wasn’t there you wouldn’t have gotten hurt so bad...you’d still have your arm...It’s all my fault this happened.” Trunks whispered. Gohan hated to see the boy going through such mental anguish. He really believed he was a hindrance to him; when in truth he was one of the biggest reasons he fought so hard to stay alive..”

Trunks. .Listen to me, I….” Just as he was about to say something Bulma came into the room. “Well then, it’s good to see you awake again Gohan. Your mom will be happy to hear this.” Gohan nodded slightly as he watched Bulma place linens on the table near Gohan’s bed. “Well, I am not surprised you recovered so quick. You are your father’s son after all, and...You had such an amazing nurse taking care of you.. Trunks here never left your side for a second. Always making sure you were well cared for.”

“Jeez mom. Thanks for embarrassing me” he muttered, a slight blush gracing his face as his mother laughed at his reaction. “I am just being honest is all. You really did take great care of him after all.” Gohan was a bit touched to hear that Trunks never left his side for very long, just to take care of him. It was nice to know someone cared about him on more than a savior level. “Well I will leave you two alone for a bit. I’m going to go call Chi-Chi and tell her about you Gohan. You just rest until she gets here.” After that minutes went by of pure silence. The only sounds being their breathing and the ticking of a nearby clock.

After a bit more of this Gohan finally cleared his throat. “You know Trunks, it isn’t your fault this happened. It would have happened whether you were there or not. Sooner or later they would have injured me very badly.” he admitted. Trunks wasn’t buying it however. “Yeah, but if I had been stronger then maybe...maybe I could have been more help to you. Rather than being another person to save.”

“Trunks. You need to stop belittling yourself like that. You are a lot stronger than you think. You just need to find the right trigger to help you see it.”

“But what do I have to do to find this trigger?! What can I do to be stronger next time so I don’t get in the way? I want to help Gohan...I am tired of being a hindrance.” he whispered the last part mostly to himself but Gohan could hear it pretty well. He needed to figure out a way to get this kid out of this spiral and he knew just the thing.

“Trunks...What if I told you as soon as I get better I will increase your training and teach you the techniques my father taught me?” Trunks was shocked to hear that and could barely contain his excitement as he hopped onto the bed. “Huh? Are you serious?! You’ll teach me yours and your dad’s techniques?!” He exclaimed.

Gohan just smiled as he sat up in bed. “That’s right Trunks. I will teach you everything I know the moment I get out of this bed and I’m ready to fight again.” Trunks felt like someone should pinch him. It had to be a dream. Gohan was going to train him the way his father had trained him. “Thank you Gohan! I’d hug but I don’t want to hurt your wounds but I promise I won’t let you down.” he told him earnestly. Gohan simply smiled there was the fire he knew and loved about this boy but he was serious. He was going to have to train this boy hard if he wanted to get strong enough to stand a chance against the androids. “Get your excitement out while you can Trunks. The second I am well enough. Your new training will begin.”
